In 1979, Namibia-born Margaret Courtney-Clarke, then an editorial photographer living in Rome, visited South Africa. During her travels she met Franzina Ndimande, who lived with 13 children in a home with a decorated entrance gate north of Pretoria. Ndimande is one of the nearly 70 women whose creative work forms the basis of Courtney-Clarke’s extraordinary photobook documenting the domestic architecture, mural art and beadwork of the Southern Ndebele people.
