The Soweto uprising of June 1976 was a widely reported news event. The New York Times featured a dramatically cropped version of Peter Magubane’s photo of protesting teenagers on the cover of its 17 June edition. That photo appears in its original format in Soweto. The book describes the abundant difficulties and insults faced by black South Africans during the years of high apartheid (1948–90). His photos of work commutes and funerals remain impressive witness statements.
