In producing linocuts featuring her combinations of comic drawings and print-making forms, multi-disciplinary artist Bonolo Kavula uses her time in residence at A4 to interrogate the four conditions of Conceptual Art laid out by Colin Richards in his essay The Thought is the Thing. Kavula performs a self-reflexive study. Stand-up comedy, cartoon strips, and drawings interact with the political and historical legacy of print-making in South Africa. Kavula offers both call and response to a group of relationships: the permanent versus the temporary, the unique versus multiples, as she explores the mediums of drawing, text and printed matter.
