Lalela’s educators work year round to facilitate the educational and emotional needs of the learners in their care. With the wellbeing of these teachers and their professional development in mind, we invited them to join a workshop with Penny Siopis on the occasion of A Little After This. Siopis created a nurturing environment in which to experiment with methods the artist has developed in her own work. Equipped with craft glue, ink, water, sponges, and canvas, Siopis encouraged Lalela’s facilitators to collaborate with their mediums, entering into a conversational engagement with their tools when guiding the glue to pool on the canvas, following the emergent shape within the ink, and sensing form and letting it arise. Emphasising the aliveness of materials, while encouraging the educators to remain open to the process, Siopis eschewed any impulse towards viewing any move as ‘wrong’, rather looking towards trust and improvisation, in this way imparting ways of learning as well as core technical skills that could be added to educators’ teaching toolkits.
