The film documents the making of a Sette Stagioni dello Spirito (Seven Seasons of the Spirit), a series of ambient installations realised in Naples between 2013 and 2016.

Conceived of as a ‘Bildungsroman’ (a novel concerned with the protagonist's formative years or spiritual education), the project materialises as a sequence of seven spaces representing the seven divisions of the human soul proposed by Santa Teresa of Avila in her book The Interior Castle (1577).

The project has been commissioned by Fondazione Mora with the support of Lia Rumma Gallery and the Madre Museum.

Gian Maria Tosatti (b.1980, Rome) is an Italian artist whose research probes striations of identity, from the political to the spiritual. His artworks often involve detailed interventions in derelict urban sites – be it a museum, apartment block, church or other. Informed by sustained engagements with communities proximate to the sites, Tosatti’s iterative process seeks to transform the found spaces into ambient installations.

Tosatti's residency at A4 Arts Foundation is made possible by the generous award from the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Italian Cultural Institute in South Africa.
